...or anyone who’s ever wanted to try designing in a theatre production!

SCT is currently seeking Designers for our upcoming 2016-2017 Mainstage Season.  Please see below for a brief description of the responsibilities of each position, as well as a little information on time commitment.  For more information about our upcoming season, check out this page, or each individual show page.

If you’re interested in designing for one (or more!) of the shows this season, or if you’d like a little more information, please contact the SCT Playhouse at 262-7336 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Design Positions Available

All the scenery and furniture the audience sees at a production of a play make up the set design. The set designer's job is to design these physical surroundings in which the action will take place.  Time commitment:  Moderate, somewhat flexible.  Much of the set designer’s work is done early on in the production process.

The way the set is painted and decorated is the scenic décor.  This position is great for people interested in painting or decorating.  Time Commitment:  Light to Moderate (depending on the set design), flexible.

In addition to the sounds of the words spoken by the actors, a play may also call for sound effects to recreate lifelike noises or use music or abstract sounds to support the drama.  The sound designer plans and provides the sound effects and music in the play.  Time Commitment:  Light/ Moderate, very flexible.

At its most basic, stage lighting functions to make the actors and the environs visible to the audience.  Light designers make use of the subtle and powerful medium of light, creating effects that can be changed at will to match the mood of the action.  Time Commitment:  Moderate, somewhat flexible.

Costume designers create the look of each character by designing clothes and accessories the actors will wear in performance.  Depending on their style and complexity, costumes may be made, bought, or revamped out of existing stock.  Their designs need to faithfully reflect the personalities of the characters in the script.  Time Commitment:  Moderate/ Heavy (depending on the production), flexible.

The hair/ wig, and makeup designers determine the hairstyle and makeup that each actor, or groups of actors, will wear.  Hairstyle and makeup need to contribute to the overall feel of the character.  Experience in cosmetology or hair styling helpful but not necessary.  Time Commitment:  Light/ Moderate (depending on the production), moderately flexible.
